Overview

Annapurna is famous for being the tenth highest mountain in the world, situated to the east of the great George cut through the Himalaya by Kali Gandaki river. Literally, Annapurna in Sanskrit language means full of grains but normally translated as "Goddess of the Harvests". In Hindu mythology, Annapurna is a goddess of fertility and agriculture and an incarnation of Durga.

Annapurna mountain region is commonly called Annapurna region and the entire massif and surrounding area are protected within the 7,629 sq. km by Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). ACAP is the first and largest conservation area in Nepal, established in 1986 by King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation which is now renamed as National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC).
The Annapurna massif contains six major peaks over 7,200m viz. Annapurna-I 8,091m, Annapurna-II 7,937 m, Annapurna-III 7,555 m, Annapurna-IV 7,525 m, Gangapurna 7,455 m, and Annapurna South 7,219 m.
