Overview

Lhotse literally means "south peak" and is part of the Everest massif. It is just 3km south of Mt Everest, separated by the South Col. There are three peaks which make up the Lhotse massif and they are Lhotse East or middle, Lhotse Shar and Lhotse.

The South face, that has been the scene of many failed attespts, is one of the largest mountain faces in the world and is more technical. We will attempt to climb via the normal route to the highest summit of the Lhotse massif. Mt Everest and Lhotse share the same base camp.

An international team in 1955 made first attempt on Mount Lhotse and an austrian expedition team first climbed Mount Lhotse Shar in 1970. After that until German expeditions got the summit in 1977, Poles and Italians also climbed the mountain. During this period Japanese, South Koreans, and Germans attempted from various routes on its main peak.

An early attempt on Lhotse was by the 1955 International Himalayan Expedition, headed by Norman Dyhrenfurth which also included two Austrians cartographer (Erwin Schneider and Ernst Senn) and two Swiss (Bruno Spirig and Arthur Spohel). Under Schneider's direction they completed the first map of the Everest area. The expedition also made several short films covering local cultural topics, and made a number of first ascents of smaller peaks in the Khumbu region.

The main summit of Lhotse was first climbed on May 18, 1956 by the Swiss team of Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger from the Swiss Mount Everest/Lhotse Expedition.
